If there were viable alternatives out there at an affordable rate (either purchase of initial equipment or continuing maintenance of performance), then more people would go off oil. But the prohibitive costs are not making it easy to get off the oil teat.

Stephen Chu can take it up the tailpipe, people need to be allowed to make their own decisions without the government picking winners and losers with incentives and tax breaks.

last post is quite moronic...in my opinion. Many countries pay MUCH more than we do per gallon of gas.

They are cheaper here, but we still need more drilling for energy independence.

Comparing gas prices around the U.S. is difficult enough and the various state and local taxes are rarely mentioned. Trying to compare gas prices around the world is a waste of time. There are just too many variables.

"U.S. Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu recently said the nation's goal is not to reduce gasoline prices but to reduce the overall dependency on oil" .....................this is the type of thinking that the Obamatard has brought to our country. Remember this idiocy when the National Ejection (oops, I meant election) takes place.

Judging by his statements to the WSJ, apparently U.S. Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu thinks that part of his job is to piss off the American people so that his boss will not be reelected.

That is right but only applies to US americans & then not all of them. Here in Toronto gas jumped to 1.405/L (that's $6.39/gal Cdn) in Toronto & that about mid-range of Cdn prices ie. VAncouver is above 1.44/L. Not to far off world prices, though some currency exchanges will make it look good.

A) we're not in those other countries and earning their cost of living to adjust to those prices.
B) When you look at the prices that consumers of other oil EXPORTING nations pay (Russia, Venezuela, Nigeria...), we're paying the most and have been for years! http://www.hybridsuv.com/news/world-gas-prices
C) All the while we're paying the most per gallon, the oil companies are exporting surplus stock overseas to get a better profit and still receiving tax breaks! (Obama is trying to remove the tax subsidies, but Congress is fighting him.)

Mr Chu states a goal of bringing America's gasoline prices to European levels so that we will be "forced" to seek alternative sources of energy. But have high fuel costs in the Czech Republic, Greece, Sweden, & France et al resulted in the actual development of alternative sources? And if so, why aren"t we utilizing those developments here?

What in the hell is happening? It is bad enough we have an oil industry which seems intent on ripping us off at the pump. Now we have politicians who clearly are not acting in OUR best interests.

Even if we pump more in the US prices will continue to rise. We need to develop alternative fuels and efficient transit options. China passed the US as the largest consumer of energy in summer of 2010.

This is how the government cares for us, by sc***ing us to death. They want to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe. My God, that translates to roughly about $7 a gallon if not more. It's obvious that Mr Obama and Mr Chu don't have to worry about paying to fill up their vehicles because WE are paying for it. Then again, even if they did have to pay for it, they're part of the 1% bracket, so they can afford it. WE CAN'T. NOBAMA 2012

To those who say they don't care about what people in other countries pay for fuel, I say apparently you DO NOT travel to other countries and DO NOT know anyone in our nation's military.
During my adult life I have been in five European countries, three East Asian nations, Hong Kong, the US and Canada. I have a son in the Air Force who has been stationed in two Asian countries, Germany and three Middle East nations. I remain keenly aware of the price of fuel in other nations as they have a direct effect on the lifestyles of both my son and I.

Last month U.S. Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu recently said the nation's goal is not to reduce gasoline prices but to reduce the overall dependency on oil. He reasoned that if gasoline's cost becomes prohibitive, we'll be forced to seek energy from sources other than petroleum.
That sounds like a dumb liberal. How do they think people that have to buy gas to get to work, and will pay half their pay on gas.. No common since..
