EV Batteries: Solid Concept, but Not Ready for Prime Time

Design News -- Despite a spate of recent setbacks, plug-in hybrids are here to stay, and consumers and automakers need to be patient as the technology struggles toward competitiveness.

That's what experts are saying in the wake of three difficult months in which the reputation of electrified vehicles was marred by a fire and a temporary manufacturing shutdown for the Chevy Volt, as well as high-profile problems for startup manufacturers Tesla Motors and Fisker Automotive.

"Every major car company in the world is developing plug-in technology right now because it has great promise," David Cole, chairman emeritus of the Center for Automotive Research, told Design News. "The fundamental concept is a solid one. It's just not ready for prime time yet."

Just stick to fuel efficient gas/diesel engines that people can afford and we will all be better off.

I think EV is the ultimate goal. Hybrids are the intermediate step until EV becomes widely feasible.

No car maker wants to completely ignore the technology but, until the cost drops and the range on a charge increases, the impact will be limited. Hybrids will make sense for the general population long before pure electriks will.

All this reminds me of the toy helicopters and cars that the kids play with for 2 minutes; then the batteries need to be charged for a couple hours. It's easy to see why they lose interest in them so quickly.

Thank you. I will be keeping my Camry Hybrid for a long time. I love getting 40mpg all day, every day. City, suburban & highway driving - it makes little difference, unlike some small econo-boxes which will only get 40mpg on the highway at 50 mph.

Early adopters usually pay more. But they are a necessary part of progress.

It's also why we don't have starships and warp drive yet. The technology hasn't caught up to support it/make it possible.

I wonder how solid they'll be considered after the economy collapses and many in America will be unable to afford to "speculate" when purchasing their next vehicle.

Yes, EV battery technology is still too primitive and too costly right now.

Shows how obama's "hopeless change" is crippling any type of economic recovery because his greenie ship is sailing and there is no time to look at new developments in a proper manner.

His "throw money" at green has cost the American public billions and has probably set back green development years in "proper" development in their mad scramble to just grab a portion of the cash cow he has thrown out there where accountability is not part of any contract they sign!!
