How about the Japan plants that blew up?

Nuclear energy built and operated in the way of the 1970's is not feasible due to the large construction costs. In addition, the Feds are idiots (once again) for not having selected and built a nuclear waste storage facility to centralize the waste (such as Yucca Mountain).
However, there have been many newer designs that reduce the size and make the nuclear power plants more of a local supplier of electricity as opposed to simply adding juice to "the Grid." If localities get their power from a local source, they pull less from "The Grid" and thereby lessen the overall load.

Woe to the fossil foolers! 1000's of tons of spent nuke waste with no solution for storage or disposal.
Woe to the fossil foolers : radiation leaking into the sea of japan, chernoybel and the 3 mile island scare.
Woe to the fossil foolers! We can frack our way out of this!
Mix the fracking fliuds with the nuke waste and run the usa on that!

“I’m the nuclear guy,” Rowe said. “And you won’t get better results with nuclear. It just isn’t economic, and it’s not economic within a foreseeable time frame.”
Then let's get going on the natural gas.

Anybody who would invest in nuclear power here and now needs their meds adjusted. The startup costs are just too expensive.

Nuclear energy is better than most other forms of electricity production.

Lower fossil fuel and more regulation after Finishing, it will not be economically feasible.

"New ones don't make any sense right now." Gubment red tape must factor into that. Now California may be an exception because of the fault lines there, but most other areas are "safe." Japan's problem was they ignored some safety precautions.

Obama would use Nuclear before Natural Gas because he does not want to use Natural Gas for reasons known to himself. If he had wanted to us Natural Gas we would have Natural Gas vehicles on the road in much greater numbers and the East Coast would be using it instead of Fuel Oil.

Nuclear power has a lot of advantages, it also has a lot of downside. If things go wrong in a Nuclear power plant the price can be high. Look at what happened in Japan and Russia, areas uninhabitable for decades.
