I loved mine; but it was a '92 Geo Metro. Got rear-ended, so got another '92 Metro a decade ago. Wish I still had it. Don't think these over-hyped new jobbies have anything better. ...So, I'm None and Done!

We have hybrid and will would replace it with another. It has been a perfect car for us. HIgh MPG, almost no maintenance, and comfortable as well as being efficient. I think the people who yell and scream about batteries and high maintenance costs certainly don't own one. Our taxicab companies have several hundred Priuses that are running over 400,000 miles now and still have NOT required batteries, have shaved their costs while being extremely dependable. Also, Clark County bought two fleets in 1999 and are still driving those with the original batteries. All are way past the 100,000 mile GUARANTEE on the batteries. Please understand what you are talking about here. The Prius Hybrid is a fantastic car. I know nothing about the others, but I would suppose the Lexus, also made by Toyota, would be equal to or better than the Prius. Our Doctor went out and bought one and she is still shaking her head in disbelief. It gets 7x the mileage of her old Lexus. Think of that when you start knocking hybrids. Don't generalize.

I used to work with a woman who had an early Prius. She kept it about eight years and put over 160k miles on it before she traded it - for a NEW Prius. One day when we were talking I asked her about maintenance, battery replacement, etc. She told me she never did anything with the batteries, and her routine maintenance cose her about 2/3 as much as her previous car. She got excellent mileage and she was obciously happy with it - she bought another one! Sad part of the story - she had the new one less than three weeks when somebody drove into her and wrinkled it all up. The dealer did her right, thought - they took back the wreck and gave her a new one that was still all shiny.

They concentrated more on Brand loyalty than green tech. purchase. I would wonder how many went to total Electric EV from a hybrid. That would indicate an EVen larger commitment to the electric tech. Versus if they switched back to Petroleum powered wether Gasoline, diesel or NG etc. Personally I would feel more confident in an Hybrid than an EV. Especially with a lot of loNG distance travel needed.

A part of the problem, at least as to Ford's hybrids, is Ford's unwillingness to honor the 8 year/100,000 mile warranty on their vehicles "unique hybrid components". This was a big selling point when they were marketing the technology, but the enthusiasts forums have many reports of Ford's dealers and Ford itself refusing to provide warranty coverage when these components fail, which is, by the way, an extremely expensive proposition. $9,000-$10,000 is the currently quoted price by the dealer to replace a failed high voltage traction battery in a Ford Escape Hybrid. Total failure of this battery is not common, but failures of internal components of the battery assembly such as the internal cooling fans are being more frequently reported as these vehicles age. Many are no longer recommending these vehicles to their friends based in part on Ford's stonewalling affected owners.

It's that same old story - Fool me once...shame on you Fool me twice...shame on me! All those good people who bought into the idea of "going green" figured out that it was THEIR green that was going and they weren't going to get it back.
