Spike in Prius complaints may not be all it seems

Associated Press -- NEW YORK – Reports of sudden acceleration in the Toyota Prius have spiked across the country. But that doesn't mean there's an epidemic of bad gas pedals in the popular hybrid.

Experts on consumer psychology say the relentless negative media attention Toyota has received since the fall makes it much more likely that drivers will mistake anything unexpected — or even a misplaced foot — for actual danger.

"When people expect problems, they're more likely to find them," said Lars Perner, a professor of clinical marketing at Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California.

greenfog: you said it.. too many jump on the bandwagon and claim problems. Some probably to get some of their gripes fixed for free. Sad world we've come to.

Those that whine about no buying a Toyota again were probably not convinced to buy one for the right reasons. Sounds to me those who wanted to be "hip" are the ones who now whine about the "flaws." Easy cop out to buy a different car.

Extensive negative publicity begets more negative publicity which begets more negative publicity. Such a cycle makes it difficult to beleive what we read in the news after there has been so much press about a particular topic.

I have an inclination to agree. Before the Camry problem, this was not an issue. The downside of this for consumers is that Toyota will probably use this to discredit legitimate, dangerous claims where there is a genuine problem.

I agree greenfog, this seems that everybody wants to jump on the wagon and get something from it. Lots of negative publicity is impacting toyota as well here.

sounds typical everyone wants to get on the band wagon and get a piece of the pie if there is a massive pay out. toyota has a problem but who knows if they or someone else will ever figure it out for sure.

I believe this because anyone who would buy a Prius obviously has a mental condition.

Too bad one can't put a sticker on the dash to push when the Toyota suddenly starts to accelerate to halt the push.

Fix it with a sticker. Dashboard sticker: "This car may be subject to sudden unintended acceleration." FIXED!

The next thing they will be saying is - "Maybe the cars are made with the pedals too close together. The drivers with the big feet are maybe covering both gas and break pedals with the same foot."

They will try to come up with every excuse in the book before they will admit fault.

Please end all the excuses and defensive remarks for Toyota. They hid this for over three years, denied any and all problems, and still don't have the proper fix. They should be boycotted until they get serious and spend enough money to fix it properly.

Just how fast can a Prius go anyway. The only place they can go fast enough to be really dangerous is in a school zone. Great for economy, not much power.

It is getting harder and harder to know what to believe about the Toyota right now. Still, whatever the problem actually is, it does not make me want to run right out and buy a new Toyota right now.

Why doesn't the media spend 10% of the time it spends trashing Toyota informing drivers how to shift into neutral instead. That would be a public service rather than pure fear mongering.

Sounds like what I've been thinking. Every time a Toyota driver drops his cell phone or is looking down texting and rear-ends somebody, he's going to blame the gas pedal.
