We are using less and exporting a lot more refined fuels, resulting in high prices for Americans.

Prices up. Usage down. Simple economics.

Even tho there is less gas being sold, the profits for the oil companies is higher - both in percentages of sales and in real dollar amounts. They could care less how much gas costs us - as long it is more profitable today than it was yesterday.

Price goes up, demand goes down. Simple enough.

would like to see how much usage has dropped since 2008 then see what kind of excuses some of these writers come up with for the high prices

Conserving gas usage doesn't effect the price of gas because they just export it for higher profits. Perhaps an export tax would keep more of the oil and gas here?

This is a no brainer. Raise the price, and people will get less gas for the same amount of money, so they will drive less if they can. Probably most people are spending more on gas this year than last year though, even though they are driving less.
